A banana is an elongated, edible fruit produced by several kinds of large herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa. Cultivated across the humid tropics, it ranks among the four most economically important food crops in human agricultural history.

1. How It Came to Europe (15th Century)

Early Muslim agriculturalists carried rootstocks westward from Southeast Asia along Indian Ocean trade routes into the Mediterranean basin. By the 15th century, Portuguese and Spanish maritime navigators established thriving plantations across the Canary Islands, which served as the primary botanical nursery for transatlantic fruit acclimatization.

2. How It Reached the Americas & the United States

In 1516, Spanish friar Tomás de Berlanga transported live Canary Island rootstocks to Santo Domingo, establishing the cultivar in the Caribbean. Mass commercial consumption in the United States began in 1870 when Captain Lorenzo Dow Baker brought 160 bunches into Jersey City aboard the schooner Telegraph, delivering a 1,000% profit that founded the commercial fruit trade.
